WATCH: Provincial Board Members in
Ilocos Sur uses Ilokano in their Regular Session
ILOCOS
SUR – Every Tuesday afternoon is a regular session for the
provincial board members in this province, but their session on one Tuesday in
the month of February was extra ordinary. Instead of using the English language
on their deliberation and reporting they used Ilokano.
In
2013, a resolution was passed encouraging the use of Ilokano during regular
sessions in the month of February while the province is celebrating Kannawidan
Ylocos Festival and its founding anniversary.
It
is also a way of promoting the beauty of the Ilokano language especially to the
youth who are now fun of mixing it to other languages such as Filipino and
English.
“Mas
maganda para mas maintindihan ng mas nakararami na nakikinig sa radio at
nanunood sa local na telebisyon, at para hindi palaging english ang ginagamit
natin maiparinig din natin ang kagandahan na ating salitang Ilokano” Board
Member Pablito Sanidad Jr said.
“Medyo
awkward lang noong una dahil hindi pa sanay dahil sa ilang mga terminologies.
Yung ibang words kasi talagang walang eksaktong translation from English to
Ilokano gaya na lamang yung Presiding Officer kaya ang ginamit na lamang namen
ay “apo a mangiturturong” na sa English ay emcee na malayo talaga” Board Member
Jaime Singson said.
A
member of GUMIL Filipinas (Gunglo dagiti Mannurat nga Ilokano iti Filipinas) or
Ilokano Writes Association of the Philippines appreciates the effort of the
board members. However, he suggested that local officials should undergo trainings
on Ilokano Orthography to further understand how to properly use the language
such as rules in borrowing terms, translation and sentence construction.
“Dahil
tamang paggamit at pagsasalita ng Ilokano” said GUMIL Filipinas member Joe
Salcedo Somera
Aside
from speaking Ilokano, the board members also attended the session wearing
Barong Tagalog and Abel Iloko.
ILOKANO SPEAKING
Ilokano
or Iloko is an austronesian language that is one of the most-spoken native languages
of the Philippine with over 7 million speaking it as their first language. Primarily,
Ilokano speaking are in Northern Luzon such as in the Ilocos Provinces, La
Union and Cagayan Valley.
It
is also a popular language with a number of speakers overseas such as in North
America and Hawaii. Some schools in Hawaii even designed subjects pertaining to
Ilokano language.
